Space city: Astronomy Museum opens in Zhytomyr

The museum of the astronomy history in instruments and tools was opened in Zhytomyr on the basis of the Polissia National University. It presents unusual astronomical instruments - exhibits from the late 18th to the mid-20th century, the press service of the Zhytomyr City Council reports.

The exhibition was created by Yurii Shevela, a collector, researcher at the Polissia University and head of the museum. For over 40 years, he has been collecting everything related to astronomy, astronautics and science fiction. He has the largest science fiction library in Ukraine.

The idea of ​​the museum is to show the development of science through astronomical instruments used at different times.

"It was astronomers who once determined our distances, time, temperature, weight. Everything we use to measure life today originates from their inventions. We want to show how people came to the modern metric system, what a pood, verst, foot or inch is, and how the world gradually moved to unified measurement standards," explains the author of the exhibition.

Among the exhibits are goniometers, antique clocks, marine sextants, telescopes. There are also unique things. For example, a German telescope from 1885, created by Max Defer, a French clock from the 19th century, which measures not 60, but 100 seconds and minutes, as well as protractors, the full circle of which is not 360 degrees, but 400.

"I literally got some devices with blood," says Mr. Shevela. "For example, a sea sextant was brought to me by a captain. There are specimens that are not found anywhere else in Ukraine. For example, a sextant from the beginning of the 19th century with a scale made of whalebone."

The museum exhibits only a tenth of Yurii Shevela's collection, which he has been collecting since he was 12 years old. According to him, the exhibition is still being formed: the exhibits are displayed evenly, without division by topic. And in the future, ten separate halls are planned: "Maritime Astronomy", "Observational Optics", "Microscopy", "Meteorology", "Computer Engineering", "Measurement of Time", "Metric System" and others.

The museum is located within the walls of the Polissia National University, the history of which began with the Zhytomyr Surveying School, founded in 1912. The opening of the exhibition was timed to the 113th anniversary of the educational institution.

Музей історії астрономії в приладах та інструментах відкрили в Житомирі на базі Поліського національного університету. В ньому представлені незвичайні астрономічні прилади – експонати з кінця XVIII до середини XX століття, повідомляє пресслужба Житомирської міської ради.

Експозицію створив колекціонер, науковий співробітник Поліського університету та керівник музею Юрій Шевела. Уже понад 40 років він колекціонує все, що пов’язане з астрономією, космонавтикою і науковою фантастикою. Має найбільшу бібліотеку наукової фантастики в Україні.

Ідея музею полягає у тому, щоби показати розвиток науки через астрономічні прилади, якими послуговувалися в різні часи.

"Саме астрономи колись визначали наші відстані, час, температуру, вагу. Усе, чим ми нині вимірюємо життя, бере початок у їхніх винаходах. Хочемо показати, як люди прийшли до сучасної метричної системи, що таке пуд, верста, фут чи дюйм, і як поступово світ перейшов до єдиних стандартів вимірювання", – пояснює автор експозиції.

Серед експонатів – кутомірні прилади, старовинні годинники, морські секстанти, телескопи. Є й унікальні речі. Наприклад, німецький телескоп 1885 року, створений Максом Дефером, французький годинник XIX століття, який вимірює не 60, а 100 секунд і хвилин, а також кутомірні прилади, повне коло яких становить не 360 градусів, а 400.

"Деякі прилади я діставав буквально з кров’ю, – ділиться пан Юрій. – Наприклад, морський секстант мені привіз один капітан. Є екземпляри, яких більше ніде в Україні немає. Наприклад, секстант початку XIX століття зі шкалою з китового вуса".

У музеї виставлено лише десяту частину колекції Юрія Шевели, яку він збирає з 12-річного віку. За його словами, експозиція поки формується: експонати виставлено рівномірно, без поділу за темами. А в майбутньому планують десять окремих залів: "Морехідна астрономія", "Спостережлива оптика", "Мікроскопія", "Метеорологія", "Обчислювальна техніка", "Вимір часу", "Метрична система" та інші.

Музей розташований у стінах Поліського національного університету, історія якого почалася із Житомирського землемірного училища, заснованого у 1912 році. Відкриття експозиції приурочили до 113 річниці навчального закладу.
